The Olympia West Elementary staff welcomed in the new school year with the help of both students and parents. At 7:50 AM teachers and staff greeted both new and returning students on the front lawn of the school. The opening ceremony began at 8:00 AM with the ringing of the old school bell by Speech Pathologist, Ms. Joyce. Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Davis, raised the school flag, and Mrs. Brand, first grade teacher, led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Following the pledge, a formal welcome was extended to students and parents. In addition, students in grade 4 and grade 5 were praised for their performance on the spring 2006 ISAT assessment. The short ceremony ended as it began, with the ringing of the school bell. Classroom teachers then escorted students to their new classrooms. However, kindergarten students were not left alone on their first day of school. Parents and guardians of kindergartners joined their new Olympia West students into the building for a Bear Hunting activity and a parent orientation.
