Earth Express, a mobile classroom sponsored by McLean County Soil and Water Conservation District, visited Olympia West 4th Graders in September. Students learned about the Illinois prairie as they rotated through seven stations which included information about what a prairie is, plants, animals, and soil of the prairie, the role of fire in a prairie, and history and geography of the prairie.
They were able to "Build A Prairie" by choosing the correct plants and animals that live in a typical Illinois prairie and also participated in a "Prairie Roots" activity. The students' final activity was to construct a prairie food web. The classes were able to learn about the interconnections of the parts of the prairie while having fun, too!
