By Abbie Hardesty

November 06, 2007

The Olympia High School Student Council will be holding a drive to collect “stocking stuffers” to send to the troops in Iraq. They will be giving all the donations to Operation Santa, who will stuff the donations into Christmas stockings.

As the service project for the fall, the Student Council will be collecting everything from travel sized hygiene items to socks, batteries and snacks. Anything that you have to donate will be used.  Student Council will also be accepting money donations to mail the stockings overseas.

There is a donation spots in the high school main office.  Students also can bring in donations from now until November 13 to their advisories. During Grandparents Day and at the Veteran’s Assembly, donations will be accepted as well from community members.

The Central Illinois Proud Families of Marines is hosting this project for the third year in a row.  Founder Patti Smith started this when her son was serving in Iraq. Last year, they managed to send out 10,000 stockings.

Anything that you have to donate would help tremendously. Each box of 15 stockings costs $20.00 to ship overseas.
