Not only was November 13 Grandparents Day at Olympia High School, it was also the day of the Veteran’s Day assembly. On Tuesday, November 13 at 1:15 pm, Olympia held an assembly for Veteran’s Day where all the students gathered in the gym to honor and pay respect to US .
The AP US History class, headed by Mr. Abrams, organized the assembly. Payton McVey began the assembly with a welcome speech, where he read off some inspirational lyrics from a Toby Keith song called, “American Soldier.” The band and chorus students (under direction of Mr. Abbott and Ms. Aurelius-Muir began the program with the National Anthem and another musical selection. Katie Cross and Emily Deal discussed and informed students about Veteran’s Day history.
The keynote speaker was Sergeant First Class Tony Hodge, Illinois National Guard, 33rd Military Police Battalion, who spoke Veteran’s Day and how he became part of the Army.
Then Principal Thurman took the stand and talked about how important this day is and why it affects Americans. Then Mr. Abbott, band director, and Liz Alberts played the Taps on the trumpet. The echoing replay of Taps sounded awesome because the whole student body was quiet while he was playing it.
