Principal's Welcome

by Tim Sexton

January 28, 2008

Welcome to Olympia South Elementary (OSE).

OSE - Our Students Excel with 3R's - Respect, Responsibility and Results-

Our students reside in the rural communities of Atlanta, McLean and Waynesville with the school building located at 103 NE 5th Street in Atlanta.  Atlanta Elementary is one of three elementary schools along with a 6-12 grade complex that makes up the Olympia Community Unit School District.   The school has a student population of 320 students in grade Pre-K through 5th.  The district extends through 8 communities in 5 different counties and encompasses 377 square miles.  Approximately 1,920 students attend the 3 elementary schools and the middle / high school campus.  The locations of the other two elementary schools are: Olympia North Elementary -- Danvers, and Olympia West Elementary -- Minier.  The Administrative Office and Olympia Middle / High School are located in rural McLean County near Stanford, Illinois.

The staff members of Olympia South are experienced and dedicated professionals.  They work collaboratively to ensure that all students meet or exceed the Illinois State Learning Standards in all academic areas and the requirements of the "No Child Left Behind" mandate.

Each classroom has a minimum of one computer and there is a lab with 24 computers.  All of the computers are networked and have access to the Internet.  The computers are used on a daily basis to promote reading, writing, math, and research along with touch typing skills. Technology is a key component of the instructional program and is integrated into the curriculum through a wide-area network that connects the separate attendance centers.

The fine arts curriculum offers an array of student opportunities in all grades.  Elementary students are provided music, band, and physical education classes designed to help them receive a well-rounded educational curriculum.  Students receive instruction in reading music and playing the recorder in the 4th grade.

Olympia South Elementary and the communities work together to improve the community and the education of the children.

The mission of the schools in Olympia School District is: to graduate all students instilled with a hunger for lifelong learning based on rigorous standards of quality and excellence, achieved through a partnership of school, family and community.

It is our hope that you will enjoy your visit to Olympia South Elementary, the communities and the Olympia School District.
