Ms. Mullen, OHS Librarian, Modeling reading aloud to Child Development Class

Child Development Prepares for School Visits

by Susan Mullen

February 12, 2008

The Child Development Class is preparing to begin their elementary school visits on Friday, February 15th.  Each student is assigned to an elementary classroom and will work with a teacher every Friday during first block to gain first hand experience in an elementary setting. Students are placed at Olympia West, Olympia South, Olympia North, and Miss Mona's Day Care/Preschool.

In preparation for this activity, OHS Librarian/Media Specialist, Ms. Susan Mullen has led several activities, which involve modeling reading and exploring literacy.  The first lesson involved instruction on how to lead a successful story time.  Students learned different techniques; such as, how to get children's attention, how to choose a book, and using elements in pictures books to teach lessons to young readers.

The second lesson explored visual literacy in children's literature.  The students learned the different aspects of picture books, types of book awards, and how text and illustrations work together to create a story.  Click here for more information on this lesson.
