by Teresa Schappaugh

February 22, 2008

Response to Intervention is a method of academic intervention that is designed to provide early, effective assistance to children who are having difficulty learning.  RtI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention, frequent progress monitoring, and increasingly intensive research based instructional interventions for children who continue to have difficulty. This method matches the instruction to the students’ needs.  Listed are some of the key points and benefits involved with RtI.

*Creates a continuum of interventions for students

*Is data driven and objective

*Blends regular education and special education as a continuum of services

*Reinforces ownership for all students

*Teamwork approach that merges the efforts of regular ed and special ed staff

*Increases the early and ongoing involvement of parents in an objective manner

Ongoing data collections and progress monitoring will necessitate increased communication among all involved in the plan to address students’ needs.
