The North Wind Challenges Yellow Sun

Readers' Theater performed by First Graders

by Tim Sexton

March 10, 2008

The stage was set and the play was ready for the winds to blow and the sun to shine as students from both first grades performed a Readers’ Theater play, The North Wind and the Yellow Sun, for the students in Miss Oester’s and Miss O’Grady’s classes.

The performers masterfully read their lines.

The performers worked with Miss Rizzolo to prepare and perfect their reading of the play. The students gave a wonderful reading of the story telling how the North Wind and the Yellow Sun settled the question of which one was stronger. North Wind whistled and blew as strong as possible which made Chilly Man hold his coat tightly to his body, then Yellow Sun gently, and with warmth, shone upon Chilly Man who then took off his coat.

The audience attentively listens.

This was proof that Yellow Sun was the stronger of the two forces and could remove the coat of Chilly Man. The children read the story well and you could hear the whistling wind as it tried to force off Chilly Man’s coat. The attentive audience showed its appreciation with quiet observations and positive comments after the performance.
