St. Patrick Day Potato Activities
by Elaine Yoder
April 07, 2008
On March 17th, Mrs. Yoder's second graders each brought an Irish potato. We compared the potatoes in many ways, including estimating and then weighing to find the heaviest and lightest. We also found the longest to the shortest. We measured circumference, perimeter and area. We wrote make believe stories about our potatoes, who by the second day had names. Finally we created costumes for our little friends. The following week we started an experiment. We are observing the growth of three potatoes. The students were surprised that we could do so much with their potatoes.
