Science Flair at South

On April 18, 2008 Olympia South hosted their annual science fair. Forty participants, students from second through fifth grades, displayed 36 projects in this year’s fair, "Question the World Around You." Together with the PTO's annual spaghetti dinner and a Scholastic Book Fair, the science fair was a great success. Parents, families and friends came to view the students’ projects.
Students could choose projects from 5 basic categories: experiment, demonstration, investigation, apparatus or collection. A wide variety of interests were displayed. Some of the experiments included; creating electricity with lemons, the chemistry of making perfume, electrical current, and many more.
The students are not judged on their projects. Instead each project was evaluated and scored based on its adherence to the scientific method. Every project was required to pose a problem or question, a hypothesis, a procedure or method of inquiry, a list of materials and references and a conclusion that showed their results.
It is wonderful to see how many participants we had this year in the science fair. The projects were not required, so students should be commended for their extra efforts. Again, congratulations on a job well done and students will be given awards at the end of the school year assembly.
