Olympia Softball Ends Fantastic Season

by Mike Lootens

June 03, 2008

The Olympia High School Softball lost out in its bid for their third state championship in this decade when it was defeated in the IHSA Class 2A State Championship game at the EastSide Center in East Peoria on Saturday.  The Spartans clawed their way back into the championship game but were eventually defeated by Carterville 13-2.  The ladies finished the season with a record of 37-5.

The semifinal contest was postponed on Friday so the Spartans took to the field early on Satuday to face Morrison.  The contest was close throughout and went into extra innings where Olympia was able to score in the seventh when Keri Leach's single plated Kara Usherwood from third with the go ahead run.  Leach was able to get out of a jam in the bottom of the frame helped by some good defense.

The ladies were honored at a reception with the baseball team on Sunday in the OMS Gym.  Congratulations to Coach Al Toliver, his staff, and an outstanding group of young ladies who represented Olympia well for all of your accomplishments.
