OMS Principal's Welcome

by Todd Dugan

September 11, 2008

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year at Olympia Middle School!  OMS currently houses approximately 450 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from the district's 3 elementary schools.  Much more than a junior high school, Olympia Middle School assists students in the transition from elementary to secondary schools.  Students in these "middle school years" benefit from the following middle school concepts:

  • Students grouped according to "Teams" (6O,7M and 8S) for "core" classes of Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies, Math and Science
  • Encore (enriched core) classes - Agriculture, Art, Band, Chorus, Computers, Discovering World Cultures, Exploring American Issues, Family Consumer Sciences, Keyboarding, Science Discoveries/Robotics, Spanish, and Study Skills
  • HomeBase - structured activity period that allows teachers to develop age-appropriate relationships with students as they supervise the activities, such as sustained silent reading, advisory, etc.

Academically, OMS students perform at very high levels.  This is reflected in both ISAT scores and local assessments, where OMS students consistently score above the state averages.  In addition, a federally funded Title I program offers assistance in Reading in both a mainstreamed classroom format, and a more intense "pull-out" format for qualifying students.

Sports and extra-curricular activities are another point of pride at OMS.  Middle school students have the opportunity to participate in Cross Country, Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Band, Chorus, Wrestling, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Dance, Speech, Drama, Track, and Scholastic Bowl.

Throughout the school year, check this site often.  Not only will there be updates on the latest happenings at OMS, but also invitations for involvement, such as Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Family Activity Nights (F.A.N. Club), PAC (Parent Advisory Council) meetings, and much more!

Thank you for visiting this site and on behalf of the students, faculty and staff of OMS -- Welcome to our school!
