8th Grade Visits Lincoln Museum
The 8th grade class recently took a trip to Springfield, IL to experience the Lincoln Museum. This year marks the 200th year of Lincoln’s Birth.
The 8th grade students started off the year learning about the Civil War and the traumatic and lasting effects of our country divided. Many historians believe that Lincoln’s position and leadership throughout the Civil War makes him the greatest president of our country’s history. Students also learned more about Lincoln’s life through cross curriculum study in Language Arts, Reading and Social Studies.
The students were able to see several artifacts from Lincoln’s childhood through to his death (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865). A new addition to the Lincoln Museum was one of Lincoln’s famous Stovepipe hats. It is said that Lincoln kept important documents in his hats. It could have been the hat that he kept his most famous speech, The Gettysburg Address.
Everyone enjoyed the life like replicas of the Lincoln Family. Several students posed for pictures with the Lincolns. The day was full of education, exploration and application. Lincoln was a strong believer in educating everyone, and it was one of the reasons that he was elected as the 16th president of the United States of America. The Lincoln Museum is a great center for education and we all enjoyed it immensely.
“Upon the subject of education, not presuming
to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I
view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be
engaged in.”
--Abraham Lincoln - March 9, 1832 First
