The Great Race
Alaska Here We Come!
The month of March was “all Alaska” in fifth grade at Olympia North. Students learned about Alaska's climate, the amount of sunlight (or lack of sunlight), native culture and art, and much more. In language they wrote a report about Alaska. In math they created mountain ranges and also created a topographical map of those mountains. They even had the chance to carve “Ivory” sculptures.
The culminating event was the Iditawagon Race in which teams of five students (one musher and four dogs), tied to wagons with ropes ran a course around the school grounds. The entire school cheered on each team. Checkpoints, rules, mandatory equipment, and prizes mimicked the real items in the real Iditarod race. It was a great learning experience for everyone!
