OMS 6th Grade Honors Our Troops
The 6th grade concluded its involvement with the McLean County Compact’s Business/Education Partnership for the 2009-2010 school year on Tuesday, November 10. This year’s business partner for the 6th grade was the American Red Cross of the Heartland. 6th grade students have spent time learning about the history and mission of the Red Cross throughout the month of October, and took part in one of the Red Cross’ projects called Operation Santa. In this project, 6th grade students and teachers made 30 large stockings that were filled with needed items for our soldiers serving overseas.
OMS 6th graders had the opportunity to listen to Marine and Army veteran, Jim Lance. Mr. Lance served during the Vietnam War, and shared his experiences as an Army Medic with students. After this, students were able to load the items OMS students collected for the Operation Santa Project on to the Red Cross' Emergency Response Vehicle. Students were able to get into the Emergency Vehicle to see how it functions during an emergency or disaster. 6th grade students ended their morning with a pizza party sponsored by the McLean County Compact.
We are proud of the service our 6th grade students and teachers provided for our troops overseas, and we look forward to working with the Compact's Business/Education Partnership next year.
