Gobble, Gobble
Fifth grade at Olympia South was voting for chicken instead of turkey this past Thanksgiving. Why? Fifth graders spent two weeks creating and decorating a turkey. Students had a ball creating their different characters and developing a personality for their turkeys.
Next, they wrote paragraphs explaining why their turkey should not be on the menu for this year’s Thanksgiving feast. To compliment their turkeys, students practiced writing persuasive paragraphs explaining why their turkey should not be eaten. Students then shared their projects with the class and were able to defend their positions. The reasons students came up with ranged from practical to insightful to down-right hilarious. Regardless of what they really ate for Thanksgiving, students learned more about persuasive writing and that learning can be fun too!
