State Budget Crisis Affects District
The Olympia School District is committed to providing a quality education within our existing financial parameters. Independent audit findings from Gorenz and Associates confirmed that our District’s financial health is improving. As a result, Olympia will receive the highest financial recognition provided by the Illinois State Board of Education.
While Olympia continues to take steps to improve their financial health, the State’s financial health continues to deteriorate. It is estimated that the State has $13.5 billion dollars of indebtedness. Olympia began utilizing fund reserves last year to pay for operating expenses in funds where the state was unable to follow through with their obligated payments. Legislators have commented through several media sources that school districts can expect a significant cut in funding next school year. Although Olympia’s fund balances will assist in maintaining programs, if the state’s situation worsens, fund balances will not be able to absorb the totality of the projected cuts, therefore, forcing the school district to consider cost containments.
The Olympia School District is asking for your assistance in reminding state governmental officials of their obligation to fully fund their portion of public education. Please visit the Olympia website at www.olympia.org to view a list of legislators in your area. Thank you for contacting your legislator and for supporting the Olympia School District. The Board of Education appreciates the financial support it has received from our communities and businesses.
