Geography Bee at Olympia North
Ten students at Olympia North showed off their geographic knowledge in the National Geographic Society Geography Bee held on January 14. Fourth grader Matthew Nelson was our school’s champion. Fifth grader Samantha Mitchell was our school’s 2nd place winner. Our other school finalists included: Addie Ewalt, Kyle Cheeseman, Hunter Schuerman, Rebecca Kath, Kody Wood, Allyssa Halliday, Justin Maaks, and Hayley Kelson. Matthew Althoff was our school’s alternate.
Anyone can brush up on geography with GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, which poses ten new questions a day and allows players to e-mail their score to friends and challenge them to do better.
Thousands of schools around the United State participated in the Geography Bee. All school winners, including Matthew, will take a written test. The top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Geography Bee on April 9. 2010. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. for state champions to participate in the National Geographic Bee national championship on May 25 and 26, 2010. The first-place National winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership to the Society.
