IGSMA Middle School Winners
Saturday, February 20th, the Illinois Grade School Music Association sponsored its annual Solo & Ensemble contest. Hundreds of students from District III came together to perform for judges and recieved a written critique and a chance to win a medal. The 2010 contest was held at Parkside Junior High in Normal. Each judge is allowed to chose one performance that they felt was especially outstanding. They award a certificate which is called "Best of the Day". This year's recipient was Jared Nicholas for his vocal solo!
Olympia sent 27 vocal entries and 8 instrumental entries. 21 students presented a vocal solo and 6 played an instrumental solo. Of the vocal solos, 16 received a Division I or Superior rating, and 5 received a Division II or excellent rating! Of the instrumentalists, 3 received a Division I rating and 3 received a Division II rating.

Receiving Division II ratings:
Brandon Bogue, alto saxophone, Jared Nicholas, piano, Amanda Fitchhorn, french horn.
Olympia also sent 6 vocal ensembles and 2 instrumental ensembles. All of the vocal ensembles and one of the instrumental ensembles received a Division I or Superior rating!

Instrumental ensembles that participated Saturday were Jessie Birckelbaw and Megan Cooney with a trombone duet that received a Division III rating and a flute trio of Alex Ewalt, Allison Schuette, and Taylor Davis receiving a Division I rating.
