Third Grade Metric Olympians Compete
Third graders in Mrs. Schwoerer's class at Olympia North became Olympians--Metric Olympians, that is--for the day when they competed in three fun activities designed to practice the measuring skills they learned during our study of the metric measuring system. Students were divided in the five color groups represented by the colors of the Olympics rings. They then designed paper airplanes and flew them, measuring the flights in meters and centimeters. "Grab for the Gold" had students grabbing a handful of marbles and measuring the mass on balance scales with gram weights. Finally, "Water Transfer" had students testing their speed as they transferred water from one container to a graduated cylinder using an eyedropper. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded to the top three teams who earned the most points.
