Second Graders Bring History to Life
Black History Wax Museum Provides Hands-On Learning
Diana Ross, Michael Jordan, Barack Obama, and Martin Luther King, Jr. were among the famous faces in 2nd grade at Olympia North this month. The students in Mrs. Baner and Miss Snowden's class celebrated Black History Month by researching a famous African American and their contributions to society.
Students were asked to portray the life of this person by finding out their background information, their education, their family, and the contributions that person made to African American history. They spent time in the computer lab looking up information on web sites, read books in the classroom and in the library, and even watched videos of their selected person. Each student then learned to summarize their information into a two minute speech.
After all of the information was complete, and the speeches were written, the students then transformed into their character by dressing up as them and bringing or making a prop that was associated with their person. Students then presented their hard work to the students and parents of Olympia North on Friday, February 26 in the General Education room, as they walked through a live "wax museum."
The students worked hard on this project and were able to learn about how times have changed and the things that people can accomplish with hard work. Congratulations 2nd graders!
