OHS Music Concert Rocked the Stage
Olympia High School music concert rocked the stage March 11th at 7:00pm in the Olympia Auditorium.
The event kicked off with the intro to chorus girls singing "Dance On My Heart," then the advanced chorus girls joined in singing "Weep No More," and "Hold Me, Rock Me." The Chamber Choir sang "Fire, Fire" which was also presented at the Christmas Madrigals. After this the boys took the stage with "Stout Hearted Men," and to close the choral selections of the program, the entire advanced choral sang "Michigan Morn’" and "Walking to Jerusalem."
Senior and chamber choir member Kayce Stutzman said, “I liked this concert way better than the last one because it wasn’t in a foreign language. Another words, people understood what we were saying.”
Next was the band portion of the concert. The song "Also Sprach Zuthustra" was the opener, followed by "Amber Moon" which featured solos by Sean Cook on flute and Sam Smedley on trumpet. Next was a spectacular melody called "By Dawn’s Early Light," and after this was "Rhapsody on a Welsh Folk Song," which also featured a tremendous solo by Venessa Danaho on alto saxophone. The last musical piece of the evening was "Lexington March."
Band teacher, Mr. Aaron Pode said, “We are performing difficult pieces, and the students constantly rise to meet my expectations.”
The spring concert is well known as the favorite amongst the students. It gives the opportunity to sing and play more contemporary pieces.
Choral director of Olympia, Mrs. Debbie Aurelius-Muir, stated, “I loved the gospel number 'Walk In Jerusalem'…It has a line that reads ‘just like john’ that is repeated throughout the song and my husband’s, the accompanist, name is John! We also dedicated Michigan Morn’ to Mr. Pode, because he’s from Michigan and he will be leaving us next year, so we wanted to wish him a fond farewell!”
Overall the program was well put together, and it was apparent that the students had a lot of fun performing. The musical pieces were more contemporary and easy to relate to as an audience, therefore providing a light hearted entertainment for the night. Bravo! Bravo!
