Oly Students Learn Military Swimming Skills In P.E.
The National Guard’s Sergeant Kedric Lambart, Sergeant Brett Scott, and Sergeant Angela Rubart showed Oly students a new meaning of life skills on Tuesday, January 26 when they took over the OHS PE swim class.
Stimulated swimming--Sergeant Kedric Lambart taught the students to swim while wearing a military uniform. Senior Amy Terhark said, “It’s a lot harder to swim with clothes on. It would be harder to survive in the water unless you took your clothes off.” Sergeant Lambart said that this was definitely a life skill because it certain is a possibility that someone could fall unexpectedly into a body of water fully clothed. It is a good idea to know what to do in that situation.
Sergeant Brett Scott gave the students the opportunity to jump off the diving board blindfolded while holding a fake gun over their head. Junior Wade Springer said, “It was fun and thrilling because you can’t see anything.”
Sergeant Angela Rubart taught the students the concept of equipment jumping, which is where the students jump in the water with equipment tied around their waists. Senior Zach Zindel said, “It was fun and hard to clip the buckles.”
The general purpose of this exercise was to teach the students different swimming skills, said OHS PE teachers Mr. Hewitt and Mr. Thornton.
