Oly Chess Team Wins Three Matches at State

The Olympia Chess Team Competed at the IHSA State Chess tournament in Peoria on February 12th and 13th and came back satisfied with their play.

The Spartans came into the State Tournament with nothing to lose. They knew that this was their chance to finish the year off right after a learning experience season. They did just that winning three matches against Peoria Notre Dame, Rolling Meadows, and Lemont. Three of the four lost matches that the Spartans suffered during the weekend were very close, much like their losses throughout the season.

Although the season may not have gone the way that everyone would have liked it to, it was still a very successful season. Much was learned throughout the year and a lot of fun was had. They posted an overall record of 8 wins and 19 losses.

Oly Chess will only lose one varsity player next year so the future looks bright. Daniel played chess for the last time in his Olympia career and did it with style. He won three and a half games for the Spartans. Daniel anchored the top board all season.

“We had a fun time at state, 3-4 isn’t bad for Olympia, and we made some friends,” stated Matt Hazzard when asked what he thought of state.

Olympia Chess is turning the program around. Coach Hieronymus is very proud of his players and has high expectations for the coming years. “Next year holds a lot of promise,” stated Mr. Hieronymus when discussing all the returning players for the future.
