OHS Kicks Off Academic Year with Eligibility Changes
"No Pass No Play" Program Begins
The academic year at OHS is opening with a new “no pass no play” approach to eligibility. These eligibility updates will only apply to current IHSA activities for the first year (Band, Chorus, Speech, Football, etc.) and not to additional activities (FFA, Madrigal, Plays) at this time.
As students work on their classes and most specifically their daily homework, any failing grade will now cause a student to be ineligible for the following Monday through Saturday. In addition, students will be required to attend one of the two mandatory weekly tutoring sessions. These tutoring sessions will be held each Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. or each Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. Transportation will not be provided by the school for the Thursday morning session. Students that do not attend the one of the two tutoring sessions will remain ineligible until they attend a session even if their grades improve.
This policy mirrors what has been in place at the middle school given their IESA regulations for many years. The policy also addresses school requirements to improve student learning under the Federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation.
The most notable parameters include:
• Students must pass all classes to be eligible for participation each week
• Students receiving a failing grade will be involved in the mandatory tutoring session
• Students not attending the tutoring will remain ineligible if they do not attend a tutoring session
• At this time “no pass no play” eligibility only applies to current IHSA activities
OHS will consider proposing a series of changes to this new policy over the next 2 years. One change could include “no pass no play” semester eligibility possibly beginning in the fall of 2011.
