On Friday, April 13, members of the OHS Student Council took a trip to Springfield with other schools in the Cenois District for a meeting; as a bonus, the Councils toured the capitol building, as well.
Members of Student Council signed up and formed a committee to contribute to the meeting. Ten students went on the trip this semester. Last semester, members of Student Council went to a bowling alley in Decatur to meet.
There are four active district schools - Olympia High School, TaylorVille High School, Riverton High School, and Decatur High School. The schools meet four times a year at district workshops and state convention.
The four schools all met in Springfield and toured the capitol building to begin the day. They got to see and learn about the capitol, and even ask Senator Tom Rooney questions they had concerning how our state’s government works.
After they finished touring the capitol building, the Cenois District all ate lunch together and held their meeting following that. During the meeting, they followed up on projects that had been discussed at the meeting prior. They also elected new members for the Cenois District board.
Two of Olympia’s own are on the Cenois District board. Senior Kristen Schuette was the president and junior Kelsey Lessen was the treasurer for the 2017-2018 school year. Next year, Lessen will be the president of the District board and sophomore Delaney Brown will be the treasurer.
The whole day consists of fun activities and learning experiences. Each school always shares cool events their council organizes and gives ideas to the other councils. At the end of the meeting, they always hold a raffle with different prizes available for the winners. The prizes range from gift cards to candy to Starbucks!
