  • Today is the solar eclipse!  We are just outside of the area that will see 100% coverage of the sun by the shadow of the moon. This means we won’t be in total darkness, but we will be in for a great show. Be sure to make observations of your surroundings. Nature will respond to this event in a number of interesting ways.

  • Safety is our top concern today. It can be painful to look at the sun, but knowing this is an exciting occurrence, we understand some may choose to ignore the discomfort. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for the sun’s impressive energy to permanently damage the human eye, especially as your eyes dilate in the unusual darkness. We have arranged for you to use safety glasses that have meet US safety standards. These are very dark glasses and you should only be able to see the eclipse. The glasses should be worn for no more than 3 minutes to directly view the sun and can not be used by another person to view for a continuous 3 minutes without a rest period.  Do not take the glasses off, look over, or around them or damage them in any way. This could negatively impact your vision for the rest of your life. It is possible to burn the image of this event into your eye so that you would have permanent blind spots.

  • The partially covered sun can even damage camera lenses if you attempt to photograph without the appropriate filter. Using the safety glasses for this purpose is not effective or recommended. NASA will be televising the eclipse and there will be plenty of professional images taken on this day, please enjoy the experience in the moment and do not risk your own health and wellness for a photo or even a moment of unfiltered viewing!!

Teachers: please help your students to ensure their safety. Do not let them look at the eclipse without the provided glasses. Ordinary sunglasses, some welding glasses and homemade filters do not provide enough coverage. Do not allow students to look through unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars or other optical devices, with or without glasses
