#DigCit Family Tip 3: Role-play

bit.ly/OlyCBV2 As kids grow, they'll naturally start to communicate more online, but some of what they see could make them feel hurt, sad, angry, or even fearful. Help your students build empathy for others and learn strategies to use when confronted with cyberbullying.

Slipping, sliding, and running to great performances! A rain-drenched course met the runners in a clash over the Sangamo Conference Cross Country Championships. Our Spartan girls captured the Conference title in a 1-point victory over a strong Pleasant Plains team (38-39)! The squad had All-Conference runners Amelia Kistner (19:22), Abby Litwiller (19:38), and Emma Swartzendruber (19:40)! They were followed closely by Anna Bieber (20:03) and Chrystal Cornwell (20:07) to round out the scoring positions. Similarly, seeing strong performances were Cam Lawson (21:00), Rachel Andris (21:22), Kaylie Dare (21:41), Raquel Birky (21:49), Madison Bales (22:30), and Irati Zaldua (24:47). Our runners look to take their impressive 44 second 1-5 pack into the postseason where they will be a force on the course! The boys’ side had Logan Demling leading the charge on the mud-ridden course in 17:02. Caden Clark (17:16) and Copper Phillips (17:21) followed shortly after. C.J. Moore (18:19) and Evan Petri (20:05) completed the scoring to give us 91 points and 4th place! Paul Yeary continued to make big strides and finished in 21:15, and Reece Yero finished strong with a 23:51! The Spartans are back in action on Saturday in Effingham!

For the first speech challenge in the Communications 101 dual-credit classes, students teamed up to write and film Public Service Announcement videos about procedures at Olympia High School. The project was a summative covering the elements of public speaking. The students had a fun time creating engaging videos that reviewed common high school behavioral concerns, like school safety and parking lot procedures. Other students focused on videos to help explain the need for certain new rules, like the cell phone policy. Course instructor Mrs. Hapgood said that the students showcased both their speaking, technological and creative talents in this assignment. Developing humorous and innovative videos with a focused message was a snap for these students!

Second graders at Oly West are focused during their morning meeting as they discuss their question of the day. Morning meetings are a great way to build community while ensuring that each student feels heard, valued, and respected.

Video: bit.ly/OlyCBV1 Let's face it: Some online spaces can be full of negative, rude, or downright mean behavior. But what counts as cyberbullying? Help your students learn what is - and what isn't - cyberbullying, and give them the tools they'll need to combat the problem.

This past Saturday, our Spartan runners traveled to Metamora to compete against 30 strong teams at the Gene Jones Runnin’ Red Invitational. The squad was split into 4 groups with Fresh/Soph and Varsity races on both sides. The 2.94 mile course saw strong performances across the board. Amelia Kistner kicked things off with a 3rd place finish out of 120 runners in a time of 18:58. Emma Swartzendruber followed in 12th place (19:42) with Kaylie Dare and Raquel Birky finishing 31st (21:23) and 35th (21:48), respectively. They all earned a medal for their efforts. Similarly, Cooper Phillips and the boys saw success in a 10th place finish (16:40) for the sophomore out of 206 competitors. The rest of the boys finished as follows: C.J. Moore (17:51), Evan Petri (19:19), Paul Yeary (21:57), and Reece Yero (22:23). In the varsity races, Anna Bieber lead the way for the girls in a time of 19:53. Logan Demling ran solo on the boys’ side, finishing in a time of 16:45. Chrystal Cornwell and Madison Bales came back to racing in strong fashion with times of 20:05 and 22:35, respectively. Rachel Andris, Cam Lawson, and Irati Zaldua rounded out the runners in times of 20:27, 20:33, and 21:51. Both Irati and Reece ran over 2 minute personal bests! Great race, Spartans! Our runners are back in action on Tuesday at the Sangamo Conference Championships hosted by PORTA at 4:30.

The Spartans move to 4 - 3 on the season with a 24 to 15 win over Pleasant Plains.

Spartans Soccer went 3-0 this week, outscoring their opponents 11-4. Goalkeeper Elijah Smith grabbed 42 saves and a clean sheet. Goals by Jace Whitted (8), Evan Deterding (2), and George Martin. Assists by Martin (3), Deterding (2), Elliott Hohulin, Austin Rebbe and Tyler Carroll. We host the Regional Quarterfinal v Iroquois West tomorrow Oct 8th 11:00am. Leaders from the Olympia Student Council joined with 80 other student leaders from The Cenois District Student Council to learn the “Keys to Leadership”. Stepping up to take action, teamwork, and listening to others help our leaders become better leaders!
